Landscapes of the Inner Self
TheresE Black

Unique, eclectic, original, fine

I am originally from Phoenix, Arizona where I learned oil painting while very young. My art creation and education continued until college where I earned a BS in Physics and published superconductor research. After many years performing technical work, I was inspired through meditation to return to art.

These highly stylized colored pencil and ink pieces are inspired by world peace, healing, Buddhism, meditation, shamanism, prophecy, nature, and myth. Some pieces are inspired by Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey involving adventure, revelation, victory, and a transformation in the hero or heroine.

My art ties many ideas together to tell stories and inspire recognition of one’s own healing abilities or hero’s journey.

I love using inspiration and my own experiences to create something unique. I hope my art will bring forth your own memories of beauty, joy, and happiness and all the times you have overcome and succeeded.

Why do you capitalize the letter "E"?

My name 'Therese' has no letter 'a'. If you search on my name using a letter 'a' in the spelling, you will find someone else.

Can I visit your art studio?

Yes. I love to have visitors at the studio. My art studio is open on Thursdays and by appointment. Keep in mind that this is a working art studio and will not look like an art gallery. Email me and let me know you plan to visit.

How is the "Landscapes of the Inner Soul" art created?

One piece of art can take 2 - 7 months to create.
I hand draw each piece. The drawing takes about one month. A starting shape is selected. That shape may be nothing more than a curve.
One piece of art started with a swooping curve which led to another swooping curve. I wanted swooping curves that intertwine. This led to a fertility goddess complete with a lot of symbolism. As of May 2018, this piece is still in the design and drawing phase.
After the drawing is complete, the pencil drawing is inked over and the pencil is erased. When I use colored pencil, the color is applied. The color takes a long time since I use rough cotton watercolor paper. This paper will hold a lot of colored pencil and wet mediums can also be used. I carefully fill in the paper with the pencil to create a smooth texture. One colored pencil will finish an area that is approximately 2x2 inches. I do not press the paper flat. After color is applied, the lines are re-inked.

I do the same art in oil and acrylic. These are done the same way and just require a little less time and expense.

Do you do custom work?

Yes. Let me know what you want and I will work with you. I can create a new piece of art for you or re-create an existing piece with small changes for you. I also do a limited amount of custom wood art pieces. This work can often be finished much more quickly than creating new art. Contact me and let's discuss what you want.

How do you make the decorative, acrylic fine art?
I design and build the base. The base is prepared. The paint and decorations are applied.

Can I buy direct from the artist?
